So, You Say You Don’t Care About Fashion?

Why everyone is has a fashion sense, even when they claim they don’t

I suppose it could be my own version of a mid-life crisis. Instead of buying fast cars, I’m buying clothes. But then, anyone who knows me well understands that I’ve always had a closet full of unusual things: a Sherlock-Holmes-style great-coat; wide-sleeved jackets and shirts from the Japanese brand Sou-Sou; a collection of quirky hats (not a baseball cap among them); a black pirate-style shirt with a lace-up neck. That sort of thing.

Until recently, I was careful to pair these with simpler clothes. I told myself I had a subtle-but-quirky sense of style. I wanted to look interesting but not stand out too much.

But, why? That’s the question I started asking. Why not stand out?

Every Day’s a Party

Some time ago, I ran across an interview with British designer Steve Edge — a famously flamboyant dresser whose style bears no resemblance to mine, but who stands out wherever he goes. He asked why we save our good clothes only for parties. Why shouldn’t we dress like every day is a party?
